Opened in 1995, The Westchester is a four-level enclosed mall that is built on top of a two-level parking garage.
Designers were most challenged with the 12-acre site, as centers of this size are typically built on a site of 50 to 100 acres.
The bulkiness of the parking structures were visually minimized by nesting the parking levels under the retail space. Bold signage directs drivers to the parking entrances.
The Westchester was created with a classical architectural style. A rich palette of materials were used with details that were simple yet elegant. Courts with interior landscaping, water features and sculptures provide places to take a rest and relax.
The interior featured two- and three-level mall spaces to give the feel of a vast space despite the actual 890,000-square-foot size.
Neiman Marcus, Crate & Barrel and New York state’s first Nordstom department store are anchors to 150 upscale specialty shops. The food court, known as Savor Westchester, is located on the fourth floor and includes Juice Generation, Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Whitman’s New York, Bluestone Lane Coffee Company, and Hai Street Kitchen.
